About the JPP Scholarship
The James Preston Poindexter Scholarship was established in 2021 to empower students of color in Columbus, Ohio, by reducing the opportunity gap and promoting access to higher education. Named after one of Columbus' most significant historical figures, this scholarship honors the legacy of James Preston Poindexter—an abolitionist, civil rights leader, and Baptist minister who championed justice, education, and equality.
Born in 1819, Poindexter dedicated his life to the fight against slavery, leading as pastor of Second Baptist Church while actively participating in the Underground Railroad. His influence extended beyond the church as he served on the City Council, the Board of Education, and as a trustee of Wilberforce University. His unwavering commitment to education and the upliftment of Black communities continues to inspire those who aim for justice and equity.
The JPP Scholarship currently supports graduates of Linden McKinley and Mifflin High Schools who plan to attend Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). As our foundation grows, we plan to expand our support to other Columbus City Schools in partnership with Sanctuary Columbus Church.
By investing in the next generation of leaders of color, we continue Poindexter’s legacy of faith-driven advocacy and hope, believing in a future where every student has the opportunity to thrive.
